"BICTON parish, on the west side of the river Otter, 4 miles W.S.W. of Sidmouth and 11 miles E.S.E. of Exeter, contains 1184 acres, and has only 198 inhabitants, of whom 137 are in YETTINGTON hamlet, on the high road, near the large and beautiful park of BICTON HOUSE, the seat of Lady Rolle, relict of the late Lord Rolle, who died in 1842, without issue, in the 86th year of his age. . . . Bicton Church, (Holy Trinity,) is a small ancient structure, situated in a romantic spot, encircled by a beautiful screen of woods, in the lower part of the park, but it will be taken down after the completion of the handsome new church, now (1849,) erecting near it by Lady Rolle. . . ." [From White's Devonshire Directory (1850)]

Also known as Bixton and as Bickington. A parish in East Budleigh Hundred, the Archdeaconry and the Diocese of Exeter. Part of the Otter Valley area.
