"BROOK, a parish in the liberty of West Medina, Isle of Wight, in the county of Southampton, 7 miles to the S.W. of Newport. It is pleasantly situated on the sea-coast, at the foot of Brook Down, which rises about 500 feet above the level of the sea, and commands a fine view over the sea, the island, the coast of Hampshire, and sometimes as far as the Isle of Portland. On the down are several barrows and traces of an old camp. A coast-guard station is established here. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester, value £250, in the gift of the Rev. T. Bowerman. The little church of St. Mary, picturesquely perched on the lower slopes of Alton-down, was completely destroyed by fire a few days before Christmas Day, 1862. Brook House is the principal residence. "
