KNILL.

KNILL is a township and parish, 23 miles north-west from Hereford, 5 from Kington, and 3½ south from Presteign Station, in Wigmore Hundred, Kington Union, Presteign county court district, rural deanery of Leominster and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford; situated on the borders of Radnorshire. The neighbourhood is very picturesque and the Black Brook runs through the parish. The church of St. Michael is an old stone building; and has chancel, nave, and tower, and is the burial place of Sir Samuel Romilly: The church was thoroughly restored in 1876, at a cost of about £1,000: three stained windows have been inserted. The register dates from the year 1599. The living is a rectory, worth about £74 10s. with 10 acres of glebe, in the gift of Sir John Walsham, Bart.; and held by the Rev. Henry Twells Mogridge, B.A. of St. Peter's College, Cambridge. The Rectory House has been restored and enlarged and occupied for the first time, after a lapse of nearly 100 years, by the present rector. Knill Court, a handsome Elizabethan mansion, is the seat of Sir John Walsham, Bart. D.L., J.P. at present Secretary of Legation at Berlin, who is lord of the manor and entire owner of the parish, with the exception of 12 acres: he is the lineal descendent and heir of Sir John De Knill, knt. Lord of Knill in the twelfth century. The soil is loamy; subsoil, stony. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and a considerable quantity of pasture. The acreage is 798 acres; rateable value, £936; and the population in 1871 was 110.
