"WHITFIELD, (or Bewsfield), a parish in the hundred of Bewsborough, lathe of St. Augustine, county Kent, 4 miles N.W. of Dover. The village is situated in an open and elevated district, traversed by the new road to Sandwich and the Roman way from Richborough to Dover. The parish contains the hamlet of Pineham and Napchester, once a Roman station. The soil is light on a substratum of chalk. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Canterbury, value £150, in the patronage of the archbishop. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, or St. Mary, has two chancels. The Independents have a chapel."
