The Victoria Cross

On the 29th January, 1856, Her Majesty Queen Victoria signed the Royal Warrant that was to institute The Victoria Cross. It was to be, and still is, the highest, and most highly prized, military decoration to be awarded. Only issued for acts of outstanding bravery and devotion to duty, it is open to all ranks, and can only be issued in times of war.

The Victoria Cross out-ranks all other British and Commonwealth Orders, Decorations and Medals. Since it's institution has only been awarded 1354 times, which includes being awarded twice (signified by an additional bar) to the same people, on three occasions!

The first was awarded to: Mate Charles Lucas, Royal Navy, 21st June, 1854. The Baltic, The Crimean War.

The most recent was awarded posthumously to: Sergeant Ian McKay, The Parachute Regiment. 12th June, 1982, The Falkland Islands, The Falkland War.

The Victoria Cross is made today by the same firm of jewellers as in 1856, and is said to be cast from the bronze canon barrels captured at the Battle of Sebastopol, during The Crimean War in 1854.

Prior to The Royal Air Force being established in 1918. The Victoria Cross showed different coloured ribbons for each of the armed services. blue for the Navy and Maroon of the Army.

The Victoria Cross Commemoration Society

The Society, has been established so that like minded people can join together to commemorate the brave and devoted recipients of The Victoria Cross.

Our aim is to inform and educate in order to ensure that all those who have been awarded this most coveted decoration are never forgotten, neither today, nor by future generations.

Over the years a great deal has been written about many of the winners, but we believe there is a lot more to be written, about all of them!

If you are related to, or have information about any V.C. holder, no matter how unimportant you think it is, please contact us. In this way we can ensure that their exploits are recorded and that their memory lives on.

Your Faithfully

Phillip Pike (Founder)

Membership costs £20.00 per year (£12.50 for under 18 years of age). If you would like to join the society or make a donation, please send it together with a S.A.E. to,

Aims of the Victoria Cross Commemoration Society

  1. The Victoria Cross Commemoration Society exists to preserve and honour the memory of all recipients of the Victoria Cross, each of whom, at some time, displayed outstanding acts of bravery, gallantry and devotion to duty.
  2. It will do this by:-

      1. Date of birth.
      2. Date of death.
      3. Date of the award.
    2. assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of recipient's graves.

      1. In the Town/City of their birth.
      2. In the Town City they last resided.
      3. At their grave or memorial.
  3. Furthermore it aims to gain permission to honour all recipients by the laying of a wreath at the annual Armistice Day Parade in London.
  4. The Society will endeavour to gather a full and complete history of each recipient of the V.C. in order to establish a permanent museum dedicated to their memory, and to the memory of holders of other gallantry decorations and medals.
  5. The Society also intends to establish a travelling exhibition which will tour the UK's major towns and cities, museums and schools.
  6. It is the Society's ambition to create 1351 branches worldwide, one representing each of the current recipients; each with a senior and junior section.
  7. Once the Society is established it is intended to hold its AGMs on the 29th January, being the anniversary of the institution of The Victoria Cross.
