The Hundreds, and Towns in each Hundred, are set in alphabetical Order; and so are all the resident FREEHOLDERS under each Town.
Each Page consists of seven Columns. The first contains the Names of the resident FREEHOLDERS in each Town; the second, the Places of FREEHOLDS, and Hundreds in which such places lie when diferent from those of RESIDENCE; the third, the Names of the OCCUPIERS, where Freeholds are not in the Occupation of the Persons voting; or the Nature of the Freehold, as Rectory, Vicarage or Annuity; the other four have the initial Letters of the CANDIDATES Names set at Top, and the black Lines drawn under them shew how every FREEHOLDER voted.

Notes

  • 1. Names of people in this document seem to be as heard and copied down by the clerks/publishers agents. This can be illustrated because W. Chase also published just the list of voters.
  • 2. Some variation will be found in the names of the places in the book.
  • 3. Docking Hundred parishes are included under Smithdon.
  • 4. People with Freeholds in "Norwich City and County of the City" are not in the book as it was a County election. Note that many residents held Freeholds outside the City so were able to vote (see Pages 154-161).
  • 5. Sir Edward Astley, Bart. and Thomas De Grey Esq. were elected.
  • 6. Under the "Occupiers column" will be found the following with numbers in brackets :-
    Vicarage (40), Annuity (5), Rectory (183) and Empty (3).
There are approximately 2957 occupiers names which excludes owner occupiers.

Use the Genuki-NFK "Contents & Search" button linked from the top of the page and then use "Search GENUKI Norfolk" box and type in the following four words (separated by spaces):-

Errors and Omissions

Whilst comparing this publication to the same (but excluding occupiers) by W. Chase a number of discrepancies have been found and are noted in the Crouse transcription. Therefore it is worth checking both.

Use the Genuki-NFK "Contents & Search" button linked from the top of the page and then use "Search GENUKI Norfolk" box and type in the following four words (separated by spaces):-
            Poll Chase 1768 "Surname-required"

        eg.       poll chase 1768 morse

Note that missing out the words "Crouse" or "Chase" will search both.

Examples of Norfolk Poll Book entries (for Dunston) show what information is available for a typical small village.
