"BARNACK, a parish in the liberty of Peterborough, in the county of Northampton, 3 miles to the S.E. of Stamford, its post town. It is a station on the Midland railway. Pilsgate and Southorpe are hamlets of this parish. It contains extensive and valuable stone quarries, which have furnished the material of the cathedrals of Ely and Peterborough, and of many churches in the county. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough, of the value of £1,025, in the patronage of the bishop. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is an old and interesting structure with a square tower. Part of the architecture in Norman. It contains an octagonal font adorned with sculpture.
