Middleton Cheney / Chenduit

"MIDDLETON-CHENEY, (or Chenduit), a parish in the hundred of King's-Sutton, county Northampton, 3 miles N.E. of Banbury, its post town, and 6 N.W. of Brackley. The village, which is extensive, is divided into two parts, upper and lower. It was here that the Earl of Northumberland defeated the Roundheads in 1646. Petty sessions are held at the Dolphin Inn monthly. An extensive trade is done in lace, and a few of the inhabitants are employed in framework knitting. The tithes were commuted for land under an Act of Enclosure in 1769. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough, value £423, in the patronage of Brazenose College, Oxford. The church, dedicated to All Saints, is a stone structure with a pinnacled and spired tower containing a clock and six bells. The tower is ornamented with sculpture, and the S. porch has an ogee roof. The interior of the church contains several ancient monuments, and a piscina in good condition. The parochial charities produce about £62 per annum. There is a National school. The Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and Baptists, have places of worship. Miss Horton is lady of the manor."
