"EYTON-UPON-THE-WILD-MOORS, a parish in the Wellington division of the hundred of South Bradford, county Salop, 2½ miles N. of Wellington, its post town, and 12 S.E. of Shrewsbury. It is situated on the Moors, and the Shrewsbury canal passes through the parish. The village consists of a few farmhouses. The living is a rectory annexed to the vicarage* of Wellington, in the diocese of Lichfield, value £842. The church is a plain stone and brick edifice, dedicated to St. Catherine; it contains an ancient font. Eyton Hall is the principal residence. Edward Lord Herbert of Cherbury was born here in 1581.
