Compiler's Notes

The following will abstracts are from volume 29 of the registered wills for the Commissary Court of London. They can be found on LDS film # 094,111. The volume commences in January of 1644 (1645) and continues into September of 1646.

Towards the end of the volume, some damage is evident, and the volume ends abruptly near the end of the will of William Cornelions. Apparently the rest of the volume is no longer extant. However, the original wills are available on LDS film # 0817,686. At the end of the said film, ten wills are found which continue where the present volume of registered wills has ended, and they are noted as such in this collection. It is possible that the rest of the original wills for the year 1646 can be found on the next successive film in the LDS collection, especially as the original wills are often disorganized.

If a document of particular interest is found, it is recommended that one refer back to the said volume, especially as I have not included the date of writing or the date of probate for these wills.

I have modernized and standardized most of the place names and given names, but I have left the surnames in their original forms.

The abbreviations should not cause too much difficulty. Agn = Agnes, chldr = children, Jn = John, overs = overseers, yeo = yeoman, etc. The abbreviation ctz = citizen of London.

The underlining denotes those who were related to the testator but had a different surname.

I have included a locality index which lists the various places outside of Middlesex found within these wills Nearly every county is represented, as well as some places in Wales, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands. Please refer to the index for further details.

It should also be noted that the parishes of Epping, Leyton, Loughton, Nazeing, Waltham Holy Cross, Walthamstow and Woodford in the county of Essex were all under the jurisdiction of this court.

Any comments or errors can be addressed to myself, Mr Leslie Mahler at lmahler[at]worldnet.att[dot]net

It is hoped that these abstracts will be of interest and use to many.
