The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Urglin contained the following places:

"URGLIN, a parish in the barony and county of Carlow, Ireland, 3 miles N.E. of Carlow. It has the ruins of Graigue and another ancient castle. The principal seats are Rutland House and Johnstown. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ossory, Ferns, and Leighlin, value with two others, £500, in the patronage of the bishop. The church has been rebuilt. There are two Roman Catholic chapels and several schools.

"PALATINETOWN, a hamlet in the parish of Urglin, and the site of a post office, in the parish of Urglin, in the barony and county of Carlow, province of Leinster, Ireland, 3 miles N.E. of Carlow. It was formerly a Protestant German settlement. There is a police station. A fair is held on the 26th March."
