"This district has very often changed its proprietors. The oldest possessors were the powerful family of the O'Reillys, cavan being called the O'Reilly's country. A great portion of it was forfeited in the rebellion of 1641. In the time of the commonwealth the O'Reillys did not possess any property in it, but the Lord of Cavan possessed about one-half of this parish along with his other large possession; the remainder of the parish was held by Major William Moore, Lieutenant Burton and other small proprietors not possessing more than single townlands."
[Andrew Beatty, Lieutenant Royal Engineers, 14th November 1835 (Ordnance Survey)]
