"ARRANMORE, (or Inishmore) a parish in the barony of Arran, county Galway. It is one of the 3 island parishes comprising the Arran Isles, the other two being Inishmaan and Inishere, together forming the barony of Arran, in the county of Galway, and province of Connaught, Ireland. They are situated in the Atlantic Ocean at the entrance to the bay of Galway. "ARRAN-ISLANDS, a barony, in the county of GALWAY, and province of CONNAUGHT, 30 miles (W. S.W.) from Galway; containing 3191 inhabitants. This barony consists of a group of islands called the South Arran Isles, situated in the centre of the mouth of Galway bay, stretching south-east and north-west from 52° to 53° (N. Lat.), and from 9° 30' to 9° 42' (W.Lon.); and comprising Arranmore or the Great Arran to the west, Ennismain or Innismain (called also the Middle Island), and Innishere or the Eastern island, which are thickly inhabited; also the small rocky isles called Straw Island, the Branach Isles, and Illane-Earhach or the "Western Isle. ..More" [From Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837.]
