The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilvarnet contained the following places:

"KILVARNET, a parish in the barony of Leyny, county Sligo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 4 miles N.W. of Ballymote. It is 5 miles long by 2½ broad. The surface is boggy, and comprises portions of Templehouse Lough and Finn Lough. The river Owenmore flows round the eastern border. It is traversed by the road from Ballymote to Coolaney. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Achonry, value with Killoran, £388, in the patronage of the bishop. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to that of Ballyrodan. There are several day schools. Armaghmore and Temple House are the principal residences in the parish. A preceptory of Knights Templars, or Drumabradh, was established here, of which there are still remains."
