The modern Gorbals Parish Church at the corner of Laurieston Road and Hospital Street.
The original Gorbals Parish Church was built 1806-1810 at the eastern end of Carlton Place on the south bank of the River Clyde. Designed by the architect David Hamilton, its splendid tower was 174 feet high but was destroyed by lightning. The rest of the building was demolished in 1973 to make way for the new Sheriff Court of Glasgow and Strathkelvin (built 1980-1986).
An engraving by Robert Scott was cut in 1812 and shows Carlton Place on the south bank of the River Clyde opposite what is now Clyde Street and Glasgow Green. On the far right is the distinctive Glasgow Bridge. On the left is the original Gorbals Parish Church, designed by David Hamilton. The site is now occupied by the Sheriff Court.
The modern replacement for the church is nearby to the south-east.
