Church History

At the disruption in 1843, the minister of Liberton (James Begg) was unable to obtain a site for a Free Church in Liberton, and formed a congregation in Newington. However the free congregation from Gilmerton raised funds for a church, which opened as the Free Church of Liberton and Gilmerton, in 1844.

By 1869, the congregation moved to new premises at the junction of Gilmerton Road, and Claverhouse Drive, which is recorded separately as Liberton Northfield. This new church ultimately rejoined the Church of Scotland.

See Dunlop, "The Kirks of Edinburgh", and, Liberton Northfield.
