"PENMON, a parish in the hundred of Tindaethwy, county Anglesey, 3 miles N. of Beaumaris, its post town, and 6 from Bangor. The village, which is of small extent, is situated on the coast opposite Puffin Island. There are remains of a priory, founded in the 6th century by Enion Frenhin. On Ynys Seiriol, or Puffin Island, are similar ruins, probably the original site of the aforementioned priory. There are some mill-stone quarries in the neighbourhood. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to that of Llanvaes, in the diocese of Bangor. The church, dedicated to St. Seiriol, is an ancient cruciform structure, and formerly belonged to the priory. The N. transept was rebuilt in 1854. The interior of the church contains an ancient font, a holywell, and monuments to the Bulkeleys of Penmon Park. The parochial charities produce about £5 per annum. On a bank opposite the church is the ancient pigeon-house, with a curious domical roof of Henry VIII.'s time; also a British figured cross, 10 feet in height, on the hills above and near it Hugh Lupus's Castell of Aber Lleinog."
