Ideas and experiences searching the online 1901 census database. ---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Fiona Poulton It is worth trying a search more than once. I spent twenty minutes trying all variations of one name and when it finally came up it was the correct spelling that should have come up first time of entering. ---------------------------------------------------------------- From: Kate Burns If you want to have the census data sorted into households ... www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CensusSoftware/ It helps in that if you find an Alfred SMITH in search - and don't know if he's your relative - just add it to this programme and then any other SMITHs you find as well- it will sort all you have added and show the them as households. It is for free and lets you have a bit more of an idea before requesting the details. --------------------------------------------------------------- From: Anne Cole You can now purchase parts of the 1901 census from this address http://www.pro.gov.uk/recordcopying/default.htm The cost is £2.60 per fiche plus postage. It is necessary to order a subdistrict which could be up to four fiche. To find out in which subdistrict the parish you are interested is in follow the steps below: From first screen click on the red "PROCAT", then enter RG13 in "go to reference" at the top of the screen. Next click on "browse the cataloge from here". You will see some counties listed on the left. Lincolnshire may not be included. Go to the bottom of the list and click on the down arrow. More counties will appear. Keep doing this until Lincolnshire appears. Then you can click on the "+" sign to get the sub districts. Note the RG13 number that you need. To send your order, having found out what piece numbers you need, go back to the initial page and click on "microfiche" (red) and an order form should appear. I sent an order for the whole of Runcorn Registration District (Cheshire) early last week and received the estimate by post yesterday. Orders take 4-6 weeks to complete. Payment can be by cheque or credit card. --------------------------------------------------------------- From: Anne Cole Put the cursor over the image and note the number that appears in the panel under your browser. This number is unique to a census page so you can tell which people belong together. --------------------------------------------------------------- *** Last updated on 21-January-2003 ***
