Yorkshire Weekly Post 1903 - Denise Light ----------------------------------------- 12th September 1903 p. 026 A Waggonette Race through Grimsby Streets - The story of an exciting and unauthorised waggonette race through the streets of Grimsby was told at the Borough Police Court on Monday morning, when 3 drivers, Hugh Cross, William Eason, and Walter Overend were summoned for reckless driving on the 18th of August. The Chief Constable, Mr. Stirling, explained that the defendants had been engaged to convey a party from the Town Station to the Docks. They commenced to race and drove down Victoria Street at a furious pace, passing and re-passing each other in a most reckless manner. When opposite the Constitutional Club, Eason attempted to pass Overend, and his vehicle collided with one of the electric tramway standards. The waggonette was smashed and the passengers were thrown into the road. A couple of them were flung under an approaching tram-car, but the driver of this just managed to pull up his car. The charge against Cross was withdrawn, but the other two defendants were fined a guinea each. 21st November 1903 p. 020 Domestic Infelicity at Mablethorpe :- At Alford Petty Sessions on Wednesday John Charles Brummitt of Mablethrope was summoned by his wife, Zillah Brummit, who applied for a judicial separation on account of persistent cruelty. They had been married for 7 years during 4 of which she had been subjected to great cruelty from her husband. She denied an allegation respecting her conduct towards a lodger. The hearing of the case lasted all day, and eventually the magistrates granted an order of separation. 28th November 1903 p. 017 The Grimsby Stabbing Affair - Death of the assaulted landlord :- A sad sequel was furnished on Wednesday to the stabbing affair which occurred in Old Market Place, Grimsby on the 10th August, when Edward Stout (30) a labourer, after being ejected from the Wine Pipe Hotel attacked the landlord Mr. James Warburton, and stabbed him in the abdomen with a pocket-knife. Stout was found guilty at the Lincolnshire Assizes on Tuesday of unlawfully wounding Mr. Warburton, and sentenced to 9 months hard labour. Mr. Warburton was confined to bed for some weeks with his injuries, and on Tuesday he was too ill to give evidence, his condition worsened and he died yesterday morning. It has been ascertained, however, that his death was caused by the rupture of a blood vessel, and was in no way due to the injury received at the hands of Stout. This file last updated: 15-July-2002
