St. Michael’s Church, Potahee

The Hospital Church at Ballintemple was suppressed in 1612. In the 16th Century, two parishes existed – Ballintemple East and Ballintemple West. St. Michael’s Church, Potahee is situated a half mile south of Ballinagh, off the Cavan/Granard road. The original Parish church, known as St. Mary’s Hospital Church, was located in the old graveyard, opposite the Protestant Church in Ballintemple. Under the Ulster Plantation of 1609 lands confiscated extended to Ballintemple West. These were united around 1780 to form the present parish of Ballintemple.

A thatched church was built on Potahee hill in 1820. This was a single aisle chapel, with a gallery opposite the altar. Later, the church was enlarged and built in a cruciform shape. In 1937 major renovations were undertaken. St. Michael’s seats approximately 350 people.
