Kilmore Church stood on the top of a high hill, below which the Normans built an important mote. The church is mentioned several times in the middle ages, and is shewn on the Escheated Counties Map; indeed, the editor of A.F.M. (Annals of the Four Masters) sees a reference to it in an entry under 885. Until 1454 it was no more than a parish-church; the bishop then transferred his seat to it, perhaps from Slanore. No trace of the old church survives.
In the early 17th century a new bishop's house and church were built, forming two sides of a square. The church is a plain building, with wooden pointed windows, unworthy of a cathedral; on the south was the great romanesque door, which had been brought from Trinity Island. Both bishop's house and perhaps church were largely restored after the Williamite wars. The graveyard lies to the south. Its chief pride is the tomb of Bishop Bedell.
