- Macefen was a township and chapelry in Malpas ancient parish, Broxton hundred (SJ 5147), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- It included part of the hamlet of No Man's Heath.
- The population was 46 in 1801, 59 in 1851, 45 in 1901, 62 in 1951, and 81 in 2001.
- The civil parish was abolished in 2015 and incorporated into the parish of Tushingham cum Grindley, Macefen and Bradley and No Man's Heath & District.
