“HADFIELD, a township and market town in the parish of Glossop, hundred of High Peak, county Derby, 2 miles N.W. of Glossop. It is a station on the Manchester and Sheffield railway. The town is situated near the borders of Yorkshire. There are several cotton-mills, in which the inhabitants are chiefly engaged. The river Mersey bounds the township on the N. There are quarries of good building stone. The Wesleyans have a chapel. Thursday is market day. Fairs are held on the 9th May and 15th October, chiefly for cattle.”

The Hadfield Library on Station Road near Railway Street is normally open Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. They have free Internet access.

The parish is on the border of Yorkshire, 2 miles WNW of Glossop and on the south side of the River Etherow.

- In 1875, the township of Hadfield was joined with the chapelry of Padfield to become a separate Civil Parish. Prior to that, they were parts of the parish of Glossop.
