St. Boniface and his Correspondence

Trans. Devon Assoc., 1876, Vol VIII, pp. 497-516.

by

Edmund Bishop

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1876 Ashburton meeting. Its author (Born 17 May 1846 in Totnes, and died 17 February 1917 in Barnstaple) was a Roman Catholic historian in the field of Christian liturgy who later collaborated in the writing of two notable works in that particularly esoteric field. St Boniface generated extensive correspondence with contacts in England and Rome.  Many of his letters are intimately concerned with the progress of his missionary work in Germany as well as the execution of his plans. Some of the Saint’s nature is revealed in his letters to nuns, his preoccupation with the education of his disciples and subjects in his letters to abbots and bishops in England; while the difficulties of conversion, of organization, of church reform and many other matters are the subject of his letters to the Popes. Much of his correspondence may be accessed at the excellent Fordham University Sourcebook website. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
