The obituary was read at the Association’s July 1906 Lynton meeting. Notice of an Association member’s death typically includes a sometimes brief biography of the deceased person, but Mr Pound’s obituary provides the reader with little biographical information, and concludes with the cryptic comment that he died “under sad circumstances”. Cursory research reveals that Mr Pound’s grandfather was The Rev. William Pound, M.A. Late Fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge, and Principal of Appuldurcombe School, on the Isle of Wight. He there established a “finishing school for young gentleman” at Appuldurcombe House, in 1867. The Rev. Pound’s “Academy for Young Gentleman” was said to have closed in 1896.  Grandfather William Pound was author of “The Gospels in Unity” published in 1869 by Rivingtons of London, Oxford and Cambridge. After 10 years as Appulducombe School principal, he "withdrew in favour of his son, the Rev Robert Pound, father of the deceased Alfred John Pound, intending to devote all his time to scriptural research and writing," says his 1881 obituary in The Guardian. The Rev. William Pound died at Appuldurcombe in 1881 and was buried at All Saints Church, Godshill. The obituary, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.

Alfred John Pound. Mr. Pound was a member for a short time only, having been elected in 1905. He was the son of a clergyman, who was at one time Head Master of the Appuldurcombe Collegiate School. He died under sad circumstances in May last.
