Recent Discoveries in the Parishes of Chagford and Manaton, Devonshire.

Trans. Devon Assoc. vol.  XII, (1880), tables, pp. 365-379.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1880, Totnes meeting. The author presents an interesting miscellany of archaeological discovery in both East Dartmoor parishes. These include Kistvaen (tombs or burial chambers formed from flat stone slabs in a box-like shape) at Chagford; as well as the remains of hut circles, and a hoard of Tudor and Stuart era silver coins at Manaton. For the genealogist the paper is a treasure house of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique geological and archaeological history. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
