The Canon in Residence

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXXII, (1900), pp. 206-211.

By The Rev. Canon J.B. Pearson, D.D.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1916 Plymouth meeting. Although its author’s purpose was to examine the title “Canon in Residence” as it applies to members of the Anglican Church generally, the majority of the examples he cites are of senior clergy in the Diocese of Exeter. Initially, a canon was a cleric who lived with others in a clergy house or, later, in one of the houses close to a cathedral or other major church. He was a clergyman who conducted his life according to the traditional rules of the church. All canons of the Anglican Church have been secular since the Reformation.  Most are ordained. Canons are today retained almost exclusively in connection with cathedral churches. A canon is a member of the chapter of (for the most part) priests, headed by a dean, responsible for administering a cathedral or churches that are generally styled collegiate churches. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
