A Survey of Old Burrow Camp, Exmoor.
With Notes on the Excavations conducted there in 1911.

Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 44, (1912), illus. pp. 703-717.

by

H. St. George Gray

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was read on 25 July, 1912 at the Association’s Exeter Jubilee meeting. The author described in detail, supported by impressive photographic illustrations, maps and diagrams, his examination of the ancient earthwork known as Old Burrow (or Barrow) Camp on Exmoor. He attempted to make a complete survey of the ancient earthwork with a view to ascertaining its construction date. It was concluded from this and subsequent archaeological excavation that the small earthwork on the North Devon coast was a look out for a detachment of the Roman Army, built soon after the conquest of the West Country, in about AD 50-55. It is situated on a rounded hilltop 333 metres high at the head of the Coscombe Valley that runs steeply down to the sea. The site commands an extensive view over the Bristol Channel. Further to Mr Gray’s 1911 exploratory research, the site was again excavated in 1963, by Fox and Ravenhill of Exeter University. The paper is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
