Dartmoor For Devonshire
Trans. Devon. Assoc. Vol. XXVI. (1894), pp. 199-208.
by
W.F. Collier
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented in August at the Association’s July 1894 South Molton meeting. It is for the genealogist, a treasury of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique history. The author’s seminal social policy paper is an unusual one for the Association and is essentially a suggestion that Devon County Council should undertake the purchase of Dartmoor in the interests of its constituents. The author, William Frederick Collier of Plymouth, and Woodtown, Horrabridge, was for many years an active Association member, having been elected in 1866. He was son of John Collier, merchant, of Plymouth, a member of Parliament for that city. Mr Collier authored several papers principally on Dartmoor for the Association Transactions. The Dartmoor Preservation Association owed much to his energy. His obituary is available here. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
