Second Report of the Dartmoor Exploration Committee
by
Rev S. Baring Gould
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXVII. (1895), maps, plans, pp. 81-92.
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1895 Okehampton meeting. It is for the genealogist, a treasury of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique history. This committee was initially formed by members of the Association’s Barrow Committee and continued annually until its 11th Report in 1906. It has sometimes been confused with the Dartmoor Preservation Association, (founded 1883). The Committee’s Secretary, Rev. Sabine Baring-Gould of Lew Trenchard was an Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist, folk song collector and eclectic scholar. He attained fame as a hymn writer, his best-known are "Onward, Christian Soldiers", and "Now the Day Is Over". He also translated the carols "Gabriel's Message", and "Sing Lullaby" from Basque to English. With Robert Burnard, he in 1893 organised the first scientific archaeological excavations at Grimspound. These eventually led to the formation of the present Committee. He was its secretary until 1905 and author of the first 10 annual reports. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
