The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1892 Plymouth meeting. It is for the genealogist, a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique Prehistory. The author’s object was “to reconsider the twin questions of the origin and purpose of the most mysterious of the pre-historic monuments of Dartmoor, the rows of stones commonly known as avenues, parallelitha, or alignments”. The author, Richard Nicholls Worth (19 July 1837− 3 July 1896) a celebrated archaeologist and historian of the City of Plymouth. He was twice president of the Plymouth Association, and in 1891 of the Devonshire Association. Altogether Mr. Worth published approximately 140 papers between 1869 and his death. They were mostly historical, and submissions to the proceedings of local societies. Some of his scientific papers appeared in the Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London, of which he became a fellow in 1875.
