Notes
The 1821 census of Dean Prior is entirely handwritten and consists of two parts. The first part is headed An Act for taking an Account of the Population of Great Britain and of the Increas or Diminution there of in the Parish of Deanprior in the County of Devon & Hnd of Stanbg taken 28 May 1821. This part consists of a large table with the following column headings:

Totals are given for each numerical column at the foot of the table. In the few cases where two families occupied one house, two occupations are listed under Question 4; in almost every case, one of these is in a different handwriting (and more regularly spelled) and is presumably the occupation of the unnamed second family. An addendum on a separate page lists seven additional households (a group of five and another of two) with subtotals brought forward and new totals computed. The column headings of the addendum are abbreviated from those of the main table, e.g. Names of Occuppers and Imployed in Agriculter.
The spelling is quite irregular. The occupation Agriculture is usually written Agriculter. The names George, Peter, Christopher, Gregory, Agnes, and (probably) Hercules are written Gorge, Pitter, Christeaford, Grederry, Egness, and Arculas. Abbreviations are frequent and range from the familiar, such as Wm for William, to the peculiar, such as pd ns class for (probably) previously named classes. One indecipherable occupation is noted in the transcript.
The second part of the census is headed Account of the Ages of all Persons enumerated in the Parish of Dean Prior in the County of Devon & Hundred of Stanborough taken 28 May 1821. This part consists of a large table with a column of names and columns for the number of Males and Females in each of the following age groups:

• 80 to 90
• 90 to 100
• 100 and upwards
Totals for each age group are given at the foot of the table. The names in this part are the same as in the first part, and in the same order, but in this part usually only the surname is given, and there are frequent spelling variations, such as Calard instead of John Callard. (These variations are given in brackets in the transcript.) The numbers of males and females in each household match the totals listed under Question 5 of the first part, except in two cases where tabulation errors are noted in the transcript. The handwriting in this part appears to be the same as in the first part, but more cramped and hurried-looking, and (even) more erratically spelled. An addendum on a separate page, in the same format but with the columns for age groups over 90 omitted (and the columns for females marked Feemales) corresponds to the households listed in the addendum of the first part.
