Exeter: R Cullum at the General Printing Office (1818). ii, 419 pp.
Prepared by Michael Steer
Electoral registers have been compiled since the 1832 Reform Act and survive from that date [Exeter from1843] in the Devon Record Office. Poll books that indicate the way individuals voted and were intended to prevent corrupt practices, appeared between about 1695 and 1872 when the secret ballot was introduced. They occasionally reached printed form, for example, as in this case, for the Exeter election of 1818 when it was printed by R.Cullum with the Addresses, speeches, squibs, songs &c that were circulated during that election. His earlier book on much the same theme was entitled The Spirit of Electoral Wit, Together with the Burlesque Election at Ide, in the Year 1812. Relatively few poll books survive for Devon in libraries and record offices. Those registers that have are listed in Poll books, c.1696-1772 by J.Gibson (3rd ed, 1994). They provide names and addresses of voters. An alphabetical list of all who voted in the 1818 election can be searched at pages 120-130. This rare and much sought-after book was produced digitally from a copy in the Bodleian Library collection and can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.)
