Hoker's Journal of the House of Commons in 1571
Trans. Devon. Assoc., vol. 11, (1879), pp. 442-492.
by
J.B. Davidson (ed.)
Prepared by Michael Steer
The paper, read at the Association's July 1879 Ilfracombe meeting presents abstracts from an original manuscript, found in a decayed state under the eaves of Exeter's ancient Guildhall and now held in the City archives. The manuscript is a journal of the proceedings of the House of Commons for 1571, kept by John Hoker, or Hooker, in which he sat as a Member for Exeter. His official position enabled him to compile the well-known 'Memorials', which were later a major source for Izaacke. Details of his life are recorded in Prince's 'Worthies of Devon'. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
