Bishop John Bowthe

Prepared by Michael Steer

Bishop John Bowthe was a native of Cheshire and held the see of Exeter for nearly 13 years. His consecration took place on July 7, 1465. Exeter Cathedral's episcopal throne was erected at his expense. It forms a noble monument of his liberality and architectural discrimination. Dr George Oliver in his History of Exeter erroneously stated that Bishop "Booth" was buried in the church of St Clement Danes, London. He died at East Horsley, Surrey, where there is a splendid brass monument in St Martin, parish church, to his memory. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Harvard College Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
