GIDLEY, a parish in the hundred of WONFORD, county of DEVON, 8¼ miles (S. E. by E.) from Oakhampton, containing 121 inhabitants. The living is a discharged rectory, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, rated in the king's books at £14. 19. 0½. and in the patronage of Henry Rattray, Esq. The church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. In the reign of Henry II. the ancient family of Prous had a castle here, of which there are still some remains.
