Haccombe - Part II (1330-1440)

by

A.W. Searley

Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 51, (1919), illus., pp. 181- 210.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 24th July, 1919 Tiverton meeting. It is second in a series published in the Transactions concerning the early recorded history of the ancient manor of Haccombe, which is probably also the smallest parish in England.  Haccombe has a parish church dedicated to Saint Blaise, remarkable not only for the many ancient stone sculpted effigies and monumental brasses contained therein, that are among the best in Devon, but also because the incumbent is an “Archpriest” who is accountable not to the local bishop (Bishop of Exeter), as are all other parish churches in Devon, but to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Haccombe as a clerical “archpresbytery” was established in 1341 with six clergy; only the archpriest survived after the Reformation. The paper is from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
