A Century’s Work on Ornithology in the Kingsbridge District
Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXIX. (1897), pp. 167-174.
by
Robert Dymond
Prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1897 Kingsbridge meeting. It is for the genealogist, a cornucopia of names and places associated with the earliest research into our county’s extraordinary natural history. In it, the author shows the extent to which the Ornithology of Devonshire is indebted to the area in and around Kingsbridge for records of many rare and interesting species of birds, and how interest in this particular branch of Devon’s Natural History can be traced to the influence of Col. Montagu, the “Father of British Ornithology”, who lived and died in Kingsbridge in the early days of the 19th century. The Paper, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. Those on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
