The Pilchard “Constitutions” in the White Book of the Plymouth Corporation, 23 & 26 Eliz.

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. XXXII, (1900), pp. 515-520.

by

J. Erskine Risk

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s 1900 Totnes meeting. The Plymouth White Book, 1560-1754, inc. was a record of Plymouth’s civic constitution with references to harbour regulations, pilchard fishing and the City’s defence. There was also a Plymouth town ledger or chronicle, known as `the Black Book', dating from the 14th to 18th centuries, that included references to such local events as wrecks, pirates, the navy, etc. For the genealogist, this paper provides invaluable insights relating to the earliest research into our county’s unique history. The paper’s author, the Rev. John Erskine Risk (1827-1907) was Rector of Stockleigh English and a founder-member of the Devonshire Association. He contributed several important papers to the Transactions, as well as many read at meetings of the Plymouth Institution. His obituary is available in GENUKI. The article, from a copy of a rare journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitization of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
