The Limestones of the Plymouth District

Trans. Devon. Assoc. Vol. XIX, (1887) illus., plan, map. pp. 419-437.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1888 Exeter meeting. Continuing his examination of the rocks of the southwestern comer of Devon (Trans. Dev. Assoc, xix. pp. 467-97), the author presents notes on the Limestones of the Plymouth District, including both the limestones of Plymouth proper, and the detached masses of the locality, notably that at Yealmpton. Geologically, Plymouth has a mixture of limestone, Devonian slate, granite and Middle Devonian limestone. A band of Middle Devonian limestone runs west to east from Cremyll to Plymstock including the Hoe. Local limestone may be seen in numerous buildings, walls and pavements throughout Plymouth. The article will be of particular value to genealogists with an interest in Devon’s early geology. The paper is from a copy of a rare journal that can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitization of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
