The Literature of Kent's Cavern: Part II -
Including the Whole of the Rev. Mac Enery’s Manuscript
by
W. Pengelly, FRS, FGS, etc.
Trans. Devon. Assoc., 1884, Vol III, (1869), pp. 191-482.
Index prepared by Michael Steer
The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1869, Dartmouth meeting. It is for the genealogist, a cornucopia of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique natural history. This seminal paper includes extensive notes of Fr John MacEnery who had uncovered bones of extinct prehistoric animals and human-made flint tools lying side-by-side under the Cavern’s thick stalagmite floors. Drawings of his precious discoveries were prepared for publication but he was unable to raise the funds to publish his muddled manuscripts. Mr Pengelly was inspired by Fr. MacEnery's report, which is presented in its entirety within the present paper. Further, the MacEnery papers have been competently annotated by Mr Pengelly, who also supervised excavation of the complex series of chambers within the immense cavern. The present paper’s author lived in Torquay for over 40 years and his extensive cave research attracted distinguished visitors to his house; members of the British, Russian and Dutch Royal families and even Napoleon III. The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
