Notes on the Machairodus Latidens
Found by the Rev. J. MacEnery in Kent's Cavern, Torquay

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. V. (1872), 165- 179.

by

W. Pengelly, F.R.S., F.G.S.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The Paper was presented at the Association’s July 1872, Exeter meeting. It is for the genealogist, a treasury of names associated with the earliest research into our county’s unique natural history. “Of the discoveries made in Kent's Cavern”, states the author in his introduction, “next to the Human Industrial Remains, none have attracted so much attention, nor excited so much interest, as the teeth of Machairodus Latidens, formerly known as Ursus Cultridens, found by the Rev. J. MacEnery in January, 1826. “Nor”, states Pengelly, “is this interest diminished by the fact that during the careful, systematic, and uninterrupted exploration of the Cavern from March 28, 1865, to the present, no further trace of the great ‘sabre-toothed felis’ has been found”.
In this paper, the author attempts to answer two questions respecting the teeth.
1.    How many teeth were found?
2.     What was their era ?
The Paper, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
