Notes on a Carved Stone Head found in the Parish of Whitstone

Trans. Devon Assoc., 1878, Vol. X, illus., pp. 388-391.

by

Thomas Andrews, F.G.S.

Prepared by Michael Steer

The paper was presented at the Association’s July 1878 Paignton meeting.  A curiously carved stone head was found in Castle Hill field, Whitestone (or Whitstone) in 1840. The carving is similar to a pattern on the border of a tessellated pavement found in Bishopsgate Street, London. The author suggests that its origin was possibly Mexican. Heritage Gateway asserts that the carving was said to be of granite, and in the form of a 'Death's Head'. It was perforated, perhaps to allow it to be fixed on a staff. It may have been a librilla, or fool's bauble. The article, from a copy of a rare and much sought-after journal can be downloaded from the Internet Archive. Google has sponsored the digitization of books from several libraries. These books, on which copyright has expired, are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
