"HOPE MANSELL, a parish in the hundred of Greytree, county Hereford, 6 miles S.E. of Ross, 14 from Gloucester, and 3 W. of Mitcheldean Road railway station. The village, which is small, is situated in a valley surrounded by hills, the summits of which are well wooded. The inhabitants are principally employed in agriculture. The soil is red loam, with clay and rock for subsoil. The tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £194. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Hereford, value £197. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is an ancient structure, with a small tower containing two bells. The Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol is lord of the manor."
