"MONNINGTON-UPON-WYE, a parish in the hundred of Grimsworth, county Hereford, 9 miles W. by N. of Hereford, its post town, and 5 S.W. of Weobly. The village, which is inconsiderable, is situated on the N. bank of the river Wye, and adjoining the road from Brecon to Hereford. The inhabitants are wholly engaged in agriculture. Monnington formerly belonged to a son-in-law of Owain Glyndwr. The soil consists of clay and loam, with a subsoil of gravel. The tithes have been commuted for a rent-charge of £227. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Hereford, value £205. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is an ancient structure with a square tower containing four bells. Monnington Court, which is supposed to have been the death-place of Owain Glyndwr, is now a farmhouse. Sir Velters Cornewall, Bart., is lord of the manor."
