"WINFORTON, a parish in the hundred of Huntingdon, county Hereford, 6 miles S. of Kington, and 5 N.E. of Hay. The village is situated near the river Wye, and is traversed by the rail-road from Hay to Kington. It is said to have had a hermitage at Chapel Close, founded in the reign of Edward I. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Hereford, value £220. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The charities produce about £20 per annum, including Mr. Freeman's bequest towards the support of a school."
