It was founded in 1866 and closed in 1953.

The Cross Keys is still there today, but no traces of the chapel building are now visible. Much of the surrounding area has been transformed through town centre redevelopment. The chapel site is now incorporated into the Debenhams store (near the western access doors, William Street) Originally founded in 1866 (foundation stone of new chapel 5 May 1896), but closed 1952-53. Upon closure the remaining congregation joined Christ Church, Beacon Hill.

The Primitive Methodist church was an early 19th century (1807) secession form the Wesleyan Methodist church and was particularly successful in evangelising agricultural and industrial communities at open meetings. In 1932 the Primitive Methodists joined with the Wesleyan Methodists and the United Methodists to form the Methodist Church of Great Britain.
