It was founded in 1886. The congregation met in the Old School Room (demolished in the 1980s) from 1886 to consecration of the church on 30 November 1909 (St Andrew's Day). St Augustine's is the only Anglican church in Lancashire dedicated to St Augustine of Hippo.
