It was founded before 1264.
The present church was built in 1870-1873 on the site of the previous 15th century church, and the church was consecrated 12th feb 1873 by James Fraser, Bishop of Manchester. One of the beams of the nave roof was inscribed 1616, but the tower and Tyldesley chapel had probably been erected about 100 years earlier, around 1500. It was originally dedicated to St Peter, but this was changed by the end of the 14th century to St. Mary the Virgin.
This site provides historical information about churches, other places of worship and cemeteries. It has no connection with the churches themselves. For current information you should contact them directly.
