The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

"HARTBURN, a parish in the N.E. division of Tynedale ward, and W. division of Morpeth ward, county Northumberland, 7 miles W. of Morpeth, and 14 S.E. of Rothbury. It is situated on the road leading from Morpeth to Jedburgh, and is intersected by the Hart Burn, which joins the river Wansbeck. The parish is very extensive, comprising the townships of Hartburn-Grange, Corridge, Hartburn, High Laws, High Angerton, Low Angerton, Long-Witton, North Middleton, South Middleton, East Thornton, West Thornton, Todridge, and Whitridge. The greater part of the land is in pasture, and coal, lead, and limestone are found. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Durham, value £650, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is a stone structure, with a square tower containing two bells. It contains a memorial window, inserted in 1857, to Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Bradford, and a marble recumbent figure, by Chantrey, to his wife. There is a National school with a small endowment."

"CAMBO, a township and chapelry in the parish of Hartburn, Tynedale ward, in the county of Northumberland, 11 miles to the W. of Morpeth, its post town. It is situated on a branch of the Wansbeck river. The branch railway from Morpeth to meet the Border Counties section of the North British railway passes near this place. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Durham, value £118, in the patronage of the vicar. There is a small endowed school. Brown, the landscape gardener, was a native of this village."

"CORRIDGE, (or Currage), a township in the parish of Hartburn, W. division of the ward of Morpeth, in the county of Northumberland, 7 miles W. of Morpeth, and 3½ S. W. of Hartburn.

"DEANHAM, a township in the parish of Hartburn, N.E. division of the ward of Tynedale, in the county of Northumberland, 9 miles S.W. of Morpeth."

"EAST SHAFTOE, (and West Shaftoe) townships in the parish of Hartburn, county Northumberland, 9½ miles S.W. of Morpeth, and 4 S.E. of Cambo. The land belongs to Lord Decies, who is lord of the manor. There is no village, only two or three farmhouses. The chapel-of-ease has long been in ruins. Behind the ancient hell rises Shaftoe Crag, a lofty verdant hill, and near it is a cave formed in the solid rock.

"EAST THORNTON, a township in the parish of Hartburn, W. division of Morpeth ward, county Northumberland, 6 miles W. of Morpeth.

"ESPLEY, a village in the township of Highlows and parish of Hartburn, county Northumberland, 2 miles N.W. of Morpeth."

"FAIRNLEY, a township in the parish of Hartburn, N. division of the ward of Tynedale, county Northumberland, 10 miles W. of Morpeth."

"FAVINLEY, (or Fairnley), a township in the parish of Hartburn, N.E. division of the ward of Tynedale, county Northumberland, 10 miles W. of Morpeth.

"GREENLEIGHTON, a township in the parish of Hartburn, N.E. division of Tynedale ward, county Northumberland, 8 miles S.W. of Rothbury. Limestone is obtained in great abundance. In this township is an oval camp surrounded by a fosse."

"HARTINGTON and HARTINGTON HALL, townships in the parish of Hartburn, N.E. division of Tynedale ward, county Northumberland, 2½miles N.W. of Cambo, and 8 W. of Morpeth. The soil is clay, with limestone and whin, which are quarried. There is a tile manufactory at Gallows Hill."

"HARWOOD, a township in the parish of Hartburn, N.E. division of Tynedale ward, county Northumberland, 6 miles S.W. of Rothbury, and 4 N.W. of Cambo. It is chiefly moorland and peat. There are only a few farmhouses. Sir W. C. Trevelyan is lord of the manor and owner. At Gunners Box in this township are the remains of a Roman camp."

"HIGH ANGERTON, a township in the parish of Hartburn, western division of Morpeth ward, in the county of Northumberland, 7 miles to the W. of Morpeth.

"HIGHLAWS, a township in the parish of Hartburn, W. division of the ward of Morpeth, county Northumberland, 1½ mile W. of Hartburn, and 7 miles S.W. of Morpeth. It is situated on the river Wansbeck."

"LONGWITTON, a township in the parish of Hartburn, county Northumberland, 8 miles W. of Morpeth. It is a small agricultural village situated near the river Wansbeck. The mineral spring known as Thurston Wells is in this township. The principal residence is Longwitton Hall, a former seat of the Swinburnes and Trevelyans."

"LOW ANGERTON, a township in the parish of Hartburn, western division of Morpeth ward, in the county of Northumberland, 7 miles to the S.W. of Morpeth. The river Wansbeck passes through both these townships.

"MULLDON-PARK-CORNER, a village in the township of East Thornton and parish of Hartburn, county Northumberland, 6 miles W. of Morpeth."

"NORTH MIDDLETON, a township in the parish of Hartburn, county Northumberland, 8 miles S.W. of Morpeth. It is situated on Hart Burn and the river Wansbeck.

"ROTHLEY, a township in the parish of Hartburn, W. division of Morpeth ward, county Northumberland, 10 miles N.W. of Morpeth. It is situated at the source of the river Font, which rises in one of the lakes in Rothley Park. The castle, situated in the park, was built by the late Sir W. C. Blackett, on a rocky eminence a little to the N. of the village, and resembling in outward appearance an ancient baronial castle."

"SOUTH MIDDLETON, a township in the parish of Hartburn, W. division of Morpeth ward, county Northumberland, 10 miles W. by S. of Morpeth.

"TODRIDGE, a township in the parish of Hartburn, W. division of Morpeth ward, county Northumberland, 7 miles W. of Morpeth, and 2 W. of Hartburn."

"WALLINGTON-DEMESNE, a township in the parish of Hartburn, N.E. division of Tynedale ward, county Northumberland, 11 miles S.W. of Morpeth, and half a mile S. of Cambo, on the river Wandsbeck. The Hall is situated in grounds watered by the river Wansbeck, which is here crossed by a bridge. Sir W. C. Trevelyan, Bart., is lord of the manor. In pulling down the remains of Fenwick Tower, in 1775, several hundred gold nobles, of the coinage of Edward III., were found in an open stone chest."

"WEST THORNTON, a township in the parish of Hartburn, county Northumberland, half a mile E. of Hartburn, and 7 miles N.W. of Morpeth. It is supposed to be the site of a Roman town.

"WHITRIDGE, a township in the parish of Hartburn, county Northumberland, 6 miles W. of Morpeth."
